Egg donation is commonly heard in the context of in vitro fertilization. All women cannot donate eggs. To donate eggs, you need to undergo a proper examination and if you qualify to donate eggs for performing the in vitro fertilization surgery, you will be told to inject certain medications so that eggs can be properly retrieved. To ensure that the process of egg retrieval is successful, you need to strictly follow the instructions given by your doctor.
There are basically two main medications that you will be required to take so as to prevent ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS); one being the follicle stimulating hormone more popularly called FSH and the other being Lupron. FSH works towards stimulating the growth of eggs whereas Lupron aids in controlling further release of eggs from the ovaries before the process of egg retrieval is done.
The egg donor has to be very particular about taking these medications in time. Otherwise, there can be some complications. A clear cut indication of the ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome is increase in the size of ovary, which can be detected easily on getting the ultrasound done.
The egg donor is usually asked to consume Lupron 5 days prior to her date of menses. When her menses start, she will be asked to get the ultrasound done when she has a normal vaginal baseline. This is done before starting with the medication of FSH. This ultrasound will bring forth the real situation. If some kind of problem such as ovarian cysts is detected, it is a matter of concern and there will be the need to cure the problem first and then go for egg donation. Ovarian cysts many a time subside on their own but when they are ultra big in size, they give an alarming indication.
However, if the ultrasound is found to be absolutely clear, then the egg donor will be asked to begin the intake of FSH on the third or fourth day of your periods. There will be regular monitoring of your blood to check the level of estradiol, the hormone secreted in the body after the development of eggs.
After the passage of time, the donor will have to undergo another vaginal ultrasound to find out the exact size and number of eggs in the ovaries of donor. If the level of estradiol hormone is found to reach the normal level, the donor is then given the injection of Human Chorionic Gonadotropins. This injection has to be administered only when the eggs are ready to be retrieved.
HCG is a natural hormone that aids in the development of eggs. 36 hours after the administration of the HCG injection, the process of egg retrieval is done. The donor is then sedated so that eggs can be removed from the uterus for carrying out in vitro fertilization surgery. Needles are inserted through the vaginal area into the ovaries and eggs are taken out. It is likely that the donor might feel some sort of discomfort in the pelvic area and also witness slight bleeding in the vagina. These eggs will be later used to create an embryo in the test tube. This is how the process of egg retrieval for in vitro fertilization is done.
