The improvements in medical technology have made MRI scans as the favorite medical process among professionals. MRI scan is a conclusive test to determine and diagnose diseases like brain tumor. An MRI scanner uses radio and magnetic waves, without exposure to any form of harmful radiation and makes high quality images of body parts to be studied in a short period of time.
While you lie down before a scanner you should be in a very comfortable position. You should keep the position of part of the body to be scanned still by cooperating with the instructions of the scanning professional. You have to patiently wait for the entire process to get completed.
After you get into the scanner, if you are uncomfortable and could not keep yourself still, you can immediately inform the scanning staff by communicating with them. The scanner will take around five minutes for every picture and will be making a knocking sound during the process. The noise indicates collection of information and their subsequent production into pictures.
If you could not keep your body part still during the noise, the resultant picture will not be clear and you may have to repeat the entire scanning process. With a short pause between subsequent pictures, the examination will continue till several sets of clear pictures are taken by the scanner.
While doing MRI scan in some parts of the body, you require an injection of contrast agent or a special dye to enable the scanner to get detailed pictures. The radiologist or radiographer may administer the injection in your arm vein, if considered necessary. In some cases scans are taken before and after the dye injection. Also, you should free yourself from all the metallic elements that you keep with yourself.
For instance, if you do not remove the metal elements like watch or credit card, they will be rendered useless after you come out of the MRI scan. The watch may stop functioning and the magnetic strip of credit card may get wiped off.
A metal fastening inscribed in your cloth may distort the vision of a part of your body before a scanner. In case you wear clothes which may disturb the scanning process, you can change yourself into a gown.
MRI scan does not emit any harmful rays in and around the room. So, your relative or a friend can accompany you in the scanning room. However, the companion will be questioned about metal objects and belongings which may obstruct the scan process. Only after taking around 50 clear images, the radiologist will be able to make a detailed report and further send it to your specialist.
If you are taking your children to get a MRI scan done, then they may have to be given a sedative or anesthetic to make them still during the scan. If the radiologist suggests an anesthetic for your child, you have to withhold your child from taking any drink or food, hours before the sedative is given to calm your child. You can wait in the scanning room till the pictures are taken. You can take your child back home, after he wakes up and is fit to take food or drink.
